How does a Coach Personalize an Athletes Training?

In college, I spent five years building from 50-60 miles a week to 110-120 miles a week. After college, I learnt that my best racing, from two miles to the marathon was done, for me, with a long Sunday run, Monday off, a Tuesday track day, fifteen on Wednesday, a hill workout on Thursday, easy Friday, and a race on Saturday, about 65-70 miles a week. Bill Bowerman had a guy break four minutes off 25 miles a week-so, how does a coach personalize an athletes' training?
