LONDON - A commanding victory in the women’s 4x400 relay and thrilling silvers in the men’s 4x100 and women’s high jump on Saturday night made for an exciting conclusion to track competition at Olympic Stadium. In the process, the 4x100 American record fell and Allyson Felix became the first woman since Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 to win three gold medals in one Olympic Games.
London Diaries, Day 7: David Rudisha Sets WR, 1:40.91!
David Rudisha, on July 5, predicted the future. "The world record will require perfect conditions." He tried in Paris on July 6, but the torrential rain that we experienced in Paris just before the meet made the evening a bit chilly, and David, frustrated, ran 1:41.58.

The Men's 1500-Meter Final and the Hurdles of International Dating
by Jon Gugala
LONDON - Last night was the Olympic men's 1500-meter finals, and so in the fine English tradition of sporting events blurred by alcohol I decided to leave my apartment (quizzically called a "flat," though I am elevated on the second floor) and catch the race in a bar (called a "pub," though this is deceptive as most authors' publishing rates trend downward the more they frequent them).

London Diaries, Olympics, Day 3: Olga Rypakova wins Triple Jump
by Larry Eder
The Triple Jump is the most technical of all the jumps. It requires coordination, speed, and grace. It would also be nice if the US could put some focus on this event. Coaches in high schools, get your prospects from good spiker in volleyball, good basketball jumper, and former gymnasts, and even ballet dancers who want to do a sport. Come on!
London Diaries, Olympics, Day 3: Sanya Richards-Ross Wins 400m
The 400 meters is a race where speed and endurance meet. The human body, apparently, as I have not tried this myself, can run all out for about 300 meters. After that, have some curry and pray to God that you can run that last one hundred meters.

Flying Pigs, Unicorns, and Amy Hastings in the 10K
by Jon Gugala
The 10,000-meters was never Plan A for Amy Hastings. Hastings, who competes for the U.S. in the women's 10,000m this evening, had her initial sights set on the U.S. marathon team at the Olympic team trials in January. And despite the fact that it was only her second time running the event, she was arguably the most gutty in the race, being the aggressor repeatedly in her attempt to dislodge any of the Big Three, which included eventual trials champ Shalane Flanagan, runner-up and former Arizona State teammate Desiree Davila, and America's Marathon Mom Kara Goucher.
